NewlyarrivedstudentswhoseEnglishskillsareassessedasbeinginsufficientforsuccessfulplacementinhighschoolclassesattendtheCentretodeveloptheirlanguageskillsandpreparethemforattendanceathighschool.Studentsattendfivedaysaweekduringschoolterms.
TheCentreissituatedinthegroundsofChatswoodHighSchoolinCentennialAvenue,afewminuteswalkfromChatswoodRailwayStation,busstopsandthePacificHighway.
Programme

EnrolmentProcedure
Allnon-EnglishspeakingstudentswishingtoenrolingovernmenthighschoolsinthenorthernSydneyarea(i.e.studentslivinginsuburbsnorthofSydneytotheCentralCoastandasfarwestasVictoriaRoad,Ryde)needtotelephonetheCentre(9411-5288)foranasses*entappointment.BilingualstaffcanassistparentswithenquiriesinMandarin,Cantonese,Korean,Japanese,Thai,etc.Attheasses*entthestudent'svisawillbecheckedtoensurethatthestudentiseligibletoenrolandthestudent'sskillsinreading,writing,listeningandspeakingEnglishwillbeassessed.
Aftertheasses*entthosewiththeappropriateEnglishskillsarereferredtotherelevanthighschoolforenrolment.MoststudentsassessedasneedingtoattendtheCentremaycommenceclassesattheIECthenextday.
StudentswhoaretemporaryvisaholderswillneedtohaveanAuthoritytoEnrolissuedbytheInternationalBusinessUnit(IBU)beforetheycancommenceattendance.MostofthesestudentswillalsoneedtopayafeetotheIBU.TheIECwillprovidesuchstudentswiththenecessaryforms,informationanddocumentation.
Attheasses*ent,thefunctioningoftheCentreisexplainedtothestudent'sfamilyandinformationaboutuniformrequirementsandtravelarrangementsisgiven.BasicinformationabouttheNSWeducationsystemisalsoprovided.Parentsorguardiansareaskedtogiveinformationaboutthestudent'seducationalbackground,abilitylevel,specialinterestsandgoalstoassisttheteachersastheyworkwiththestudents.
CentreOrganisation
Basedontheasses*entoftheirlanguageskills,studentsareplacedinoneoffourlevels:Foundation,Level1,Level2andLevel3.StudentsareexpectedtocompleteLevel3beforetheytransfertohighschool.Eachlevelcoversaterm'swork(eachtermisapproximatelytenweeks).Withineachlevelthestudentsaredividedintoclasses-usuallytherearebetween10to18studentsineachgroup.Theclassesineachlevelarebasedonthestudents'ages.
Theaveragelengthofstayisapproximatelythree(3)terms,althoughsomestudentswhoencounterdifficultylearningEnglish(possiblybecauseofpreviouslyinterruptedschooling,nopreviousknowledgeofEnglish,etc.)mayneedalongertimetobenefitfromtheprogrammesattheCentre.theCentrecatersforindividualdifferencesandadaptstheprogrammetotheneedsofeachgroupand/orindividual.
Attheendofeachtermagroupofstudents,havingcompletedLevel3,leavestheCentretogotohighschool.Studentsintheotherlevelsarepromotedatthebeginningofthenexttermprovidedtheyhavesuccessfullydevelopedthenecessaryskills.Theprogressofstudentsi*onitoredatweeklystaffmeetings.
TheStaff
TeachersarequalifiedandexperiencedEnglishasaSecondLanguogeteachers,manywithqualificationsandexperienceteachinginhighschoolcurriculumareas.Maths,Science,HistoryandGeographyofAustraliaandLiteraturearetaughtwitheachstudent'slanguagedifficultiesbeingcateredfor.Bi-lingualsupportisgivenbyTeachers'Aides.

Parent/TeachernightsareheldattheendofTerms1and3.Atthese,teachersarrangeappointmentstotalkwithparentsindividuallyabouttheirchild.AwrittenreportisissuedtoparentsattheendofTerms2and4.Inaddition,parentscanatanytimerequestaninterviewwithstafftodiscusstheirchild'sprogress.parentsarewelcometovisittheCentreatanytimebutareparticularlyinvitedtoattendspecialactivitiessuchassportscarnivals,Graduationceremoniesandexcursions,etc.
TransfertoHighSchool
